SINGING 1996 : Second Prize
The Romanian soprano Ana Camelia Stefanescu was born in 1974 in Bucharest. Following studies at the Dinu Lipatti Music School in Bucharest, she decided to concentrate on singing and worked with Ionel Voineag and Andreiana Rosca. She has been awarded prizes in a number of important singing competitions including the Verviers International Competition, but caught the attention of the international opera world when she won second prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition.

As principal artist with the Romanian National Opera, Ana Camelia Stefanescu sang numerous roles including Lucia/Lucia di Lammermoor, Rosina/The Barber of Seville, Zerbinetta/Ariadne auf Naxos, the Queen of the Night/The Magic Flute and Zerlina/Don Giovanni. In 1996 Ana Camelia Stefanescu made her Italian operatic debut as the Queen of the Night at the Teatro Comunale in Florence, and her Vienna State Opera and Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin debut in the same role. Other past engagements include the Queen of the Night on the tour to Japan with the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, Olympia /Les Contes d'Hoffmann in Dieter Kaegi's new production for Opera Ireland, and Lukullus and Solimano at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin. Furthermore Ana Camelia Stefanescu sang Mozart's Madame Hertz/Der SchauspielDirektor at the Théâtre de la Place in Liège and the Queen of the Night at the Hamburg State Opera and in her debut at the Teatro Real in Madrid. In November 2000 she sang the roles of "e Feu, la Princesse and le Rossignol in concert performances of L'Enfant et les Sortilèges also in Madrid.

She recently got lavish praise for her role debut as Ophélie (Hamlet/A. Thomas) in the renowned production of stage director Vincent Boussard and conducted by Patrick Fournillier at the Opéra National du Rhin, Strasbourg/Mulhouse (June 2011).
Amongst her new parts: La fée (Cendrillon/Massenet) and Violetta (La Traviata/Verdi).
Other European engagements of the last seasons included several series of Queen of the Night at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, Graz Opernhaus and Opéra de Nice, Fauré's Requiem with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Bilbao, L'Enfant et les Sortilèges at the Teatro Real in Madrid and with the Orquesta de Valencia and Ligeti's Requiem with the Orquesta Nacional de Espana.

In addition to her opera engagements Ana Camelia Stefanescu has made several recordings with the Romanian Broadcasting Corporation and for WDR in Cologne. She has also given a number of concerts and recitals in Romania, Spain, Poland, Switzerland, France, Holland, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom, including a concert in her native Romania, where she was the soprano soloist with José Carreras.

In Belgium, where she has now decided to live on a permanent base, she recently appeared in La Petite Messe Solennelle by G. Rossini. Last March she returned to Bucharest to sing the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor. She also took part at Chamber Music concert in Lisbon (with works by Schönberg). Recently she gave a concert together with José Van Dam at the Brussels Palais des Beaux Arts and sang Beethoven Missa Solemnis with l’Orchestre national de Lorraine (June 2010).

During the season 2011/2012, she will appear at several occasions at the La Monnaie in Brussels.
