Focus on the laureates of Violin 2019 : Timothy Chooi

He proved to be the perfect presenter for the broadcast on the interactive Switch platform of the final of our 2021 Piano Competition, which was held behind closed doors because of the pandemic.
Recent debuts in Europe include the Verbier Festival and a tour with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester in 2022. In 2023, Timothy made his recital debut at Carnegie Hall, he recorded with Anne-Sophie Mutter and her Virtuosi on Deutsche Grammophon and performed for the first time in the UK with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Beginning of November, Timothy was invited for two exciting concerts at the Emirates Palace Auditorium in Abu Dhabi. He made his debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Vasily Petrenko, performing Korngold’s and Bruch's Violin Concertos. Timothy is due to come back to the Emirates. In February 2024, he will perform a recital with his pianist Changyong Shin in Al Ain.
Further on in November, the Wimbledon Music Festival invites him for his London debut, together with his brother Nikki Chooi, also a Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition Laureate (2012). With their ensemble, the Chooi Brothers, they are championing the repertoire for two violins by commissioning and recording works by new composers, but also discovering and performing repertoire from the past.
On 9 May 2024, Timothy will be returning to Brussels to perform at Bozar with the European Union Youth Orchestra. He is particularly looking forward to this project as it is a homecoming to the birthplace of his international career, and he hopes he might share many experiences with the young musicians of the orchestra and give them impact as they are developing to become professional musicians.
Timothy serves as the Professor of Violin at the University of Ottawa in Canada. He performs on two exceptional rare violins: the Titan Guarneri Del Gesu violin from 1741, on loan from CANIMEX INC. in Drummondville, Quebec, Canada, and the Engleman Stradivarius violin from 1709, on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation in Japan.
